Announcements / Purpose and Mission Statement for HoloNet Audio
« Last post by CmdrJoe on October 20, 2025, 02:17:36 am »
HoloNet Audio was founded with its first track on SoundCloud on February 11th, 2013. As a podcast, the purpose of HoloNet Audio is to deliver quality family-friendly fan-written STAR WARS and STAR TREK fiction in an audiobook-style presentation.

The HoloNet Audio forum began on January 28th, 2025. The idea for creating a forum was to expand the podcast into a community, or club, of like-minded fans of STAR WARS and/or STAR TREK that enjoy reading / writing / listening to fanfiction, and to give fans an opportunity to have their own fanfics turned into an audiobook-style presentation (within established guidelines).

Fans can also post their own family-friendly fanfiction stories, with no word limit, in the publicly viewable section of the forum.

In addition, the Forum Members Only section of the boards (non-publicly viewable; users must be logged-in to view and post there) is used for The planning of any club events, club member merchandise, and the implementation of FANFIC (Fanfiction Initiative for Charity).

FANFIC is a simple club effort in which 1GB USB flash drives, pre-loaded with HoloNet Audio content (usually from a recommended list of HoloNet Audio tracks), are given or donated to individuals or charitable causes, especially charities that assist the blind. There are no financial transactions involved with this initiative, other than the inital cost of the USB drives themselves.

The HoloNet Audio club, as a fan group and a podcast together, collectively declares the following Mission Statement:

HoloNet Audio is a STAR WARS and STAR TREK fanfiction podcast and fan group, dedicated to presenting family-friendly content, both written and narrated, to visually-impaired fans, and fandom at large.

It sounds good I like it.  Its too bad you don't get very many listens, specially since you been around for so many years, but maybe its because the forum is new. You do good work.

Here is the audio version of this fanfic!

A former Imperial pilot, disfigured in battle and no longer useful to the cause she fought for, must make a decision that will decide her fate, and have a profound effect on the looming major battle ahead.
The theme of the story is a message of acceptance, that no matter what you look like don't let others shame you for your appearance.

Announcements / Family-friendly fanfiction with a purpose. The FANFIC charity project
« Last post by CmdrJoe on October 07, 2025, 01:22:11 am »
FANFIC - FAN Fiction Initiative for Charity

This is a new small charity project that HoloNet Audio is undertaking as a club, beyond the podcast itself.

The purpose of the FANFIC charity project is twofold:
  • To entertain other fans of STAR WARS and STAR TREK and inspire them.
  • To reach out to blind fans and encourage them.

It is currently evolving and being discussed in the Forum Members Only section in this thread here.

However, since guests cannot see that section of the forums (I prefer participants of FANFIC to be registered members), any important announcements about this charity effort, which involves no raising of funds and minimal financial cost, will be posted here for the general public to view.

If you are curious about FANFIC, and/or would like to participate, please register for the forum and see this thread in the Forum Members Only section.

Announcements / Re: Current projects / Production updates

I'm currently working on The Scars of Stormwind, by forum member Pilot Jax.  I am going to use a sort of hybrid style of narration this time, using both AI narration as well as myself.

I found an AI source that is absolutely incredible sounding, in my opinion.  This will be a trial run, using Scars of Stormwind as a sort of guinea pig.  I will still voice parts within the narration.

I've always been proud of HoloNet Audio using human narration, with AI voices used sparingly, only when needed.  However, two things are causing me to do this "trial run:"

  • My eyes are not what they once were. I've done voice over work in the past, and I still can sound edit fairly well. But reading copy (a script) is becoming more challenging as I get older. I've always been legally blind in one eye (correctable enough with glasses), but to read up close is becoming just a wee bit more difficult.  I still enjoy narrating and doing some voice over here and there, but it is getting harder on the ol' eyeballs.

  • I believe that AI is evolving to the point that voice over work as a profession is a fading candle. I say that, because of how it is becoming more and more difficult to recognize AI, in some instances, from an actual human voice.  With the right software, this could be an easy solution in keeping HoloNet Audio going, and my eyes (and other health stuff).

I want to be clear:  I will never replace human narration on HoloNet Audio completely with AI.  However, I do believe in using a believable-sounding AI (in which it is hard to distinguish from a human voice), along with actual human voices, in order to create an entertaining and meaningful audio production.  We'll see how Scars of Stormwind turns out, and if this is a good avenue for us to continue on.

I decided I don't want this one made into audio, I hope that's ok. Can you move it to the regular fanfic section?
